ZOS - True Colors

ZOS - True Colors

Fringe /frinjan ornamental border of threads left loose or formed into tassels or twists, used to edge clothing or material.

Fringe originates in the ends of the warp, projecting beyond the woven fabric. In this way, a cut piece of fabric would not require hemming in order to achieve an edge which would not unravel: several strands of weft threads would be removed and the warp threads would remain. More commonly it is made separately and sewn on, consisting sometimes of projecting ends, twisted or plaited together, and sometimes of loose threads of wool, silk, or linen, or narrow strips of LEATHER.

......  I knew I was doing something right when I was designing my collection of leather fringe earrings!  :)  As we know, fashion recycles itself and comes back around sooner or later - full circle.  And NOW, the trend is FRINGE.  You may recall this in the 70's & 80's or even way back to the Roaring 20's (My favorite era! Next to the 70's of course!).  Well now, it's back again and you can certainly check out these looks below.  Familiarize yourself with possibly incorporating fringe into your wardrobe or as an accessory - to start (if you're not so adventurous; yet lol.  Shop ZOS and get your leather fringe earrings and you will be on point with this trend for the season!  Don't miss out because as trends go....  it will be gone before you know it!

If you haven't already noticed, I work with leather.  Lambskin leather, that is.  I choose to work with lambskin leather because it's the softest of the leather and is versatile with the jewellery and accessories I create.

It is soft and supple to the touch, great for stylish belts, earrings, bracelets and pretty much any trim or design for any piece of clothing.  Leather is a luxury.  It is a material you would equate to of high quality and caliber.  It is a durable fabric, long lasting and worth the purchase, especially if you're one to keep your hard earned goods lasting for years to come! - If not, it's not too late to consider and your feet will THANK YOU for it!  ;)

I love lambskin leather for the range of colors it comes in and also, for it's versatility in thickness, texture and weight. Another reason why I love leather is because it doesn't FRAY like fabric does! You just cut it and that's that.  Unlike fabric, you have to sew the edges and clean finish them.  With leather, you have the option to finish the edges with bonding tape or sewing it.  With fabric, if you leave a piece of clothing raw, it is said to look and be unfinished, whereas with leather, leaving it raw can be the style and look of the piece.  So, in conclusion, leather is just a much more easy and versatile material to work with, in my opinion - and also why it is my material of choice.

Leather is just HOT.  It looks hot, you feel good wearing it and it's a luxury.  Who doesn't love to be wrapped in luxury?  It's been on trend on the runways and is still trending. Whether it be on the runways of Paris, Milan or New York; down to the very streets of these cities, you will see leather in every shape and form and if you haven't gotten the memo:  It's not going anywhere  :)

As my blog is called TRUE COLORS, it is only fitting to get back to the COLOR of things... Now, if you recall in my first couple blog posts, COLOR AND TRUE COLORS, I mentioned the psyche of color and:

1) How it affects your mood

2) How it represents your personality type

Here's a sneak peak of the different colors associated with your personality:

Need to look good technically, be right, and be respected. They are strong leaders and love challenges.

Need to have integrity and be appreciated. They are focused on quality and creating strong relationships.

Need to be accepted and treated with kindness. They are logical, objective, and tolerant of others.

Need to be noticed and have fun. They love life, social connections, and being positive and spontaneous

Any Idea what mine is??  I also mentioned it in my earlier blog post TRUE COLORS...

...  Let Your Dreams Take Flight

I came across this cafe in Cerritos called Arté Cafe.  Now if you are Filipino, only you would understand this; or if you have an extended Filipino family, you would know the meaning.  I was drawn to take a picture because of the strong significance of it and how funny it was to me.

In Filipino, Arté which is actually the short form for Ma'arte' means 'over acting'.  It is usually a young girl who over exaggerates everything and is overly dramatic.  Drama Queen, Diva... etc are the English versions to this word.  Can you guess why this was funny to me?  And the reason for writing it in this blog post?  Without stating the obvious, maybe I was the little girl that was called this lol and maybe even so to this day ;)  Well, you know you've heard of the saying you can't teach an ol' gal new tricks... well I guess the same applies here :)

It's funny because as a little girl and growing up, my family, especially my parents called me this a lot.  Maarte.  I'm so used to it by now, it just makes me laugh.  It's a little inside thing now between my mother and I, cute and quirky.  We just laugh and have fun with it.  Now as a lady, and grown :)

After doing a little bit of research on this word, for this blog actually.  It lead me to a very interesting website that gives the definition and translation to the word Maarte, as well as examples of it being used in sentences.  BUT above all else, the BEST tidbit of information of allll, I just learned from this link is this:

People who are fashion designers are maarte, but they are forgiven for being meticulous because it's their job.

So, see Mom and Dad! lol  It's not my fault, it's just meant to be!  It Makes More Sense to me now, than ever before!  Do you know how refreshing this little tidbit of information is to me?!  Now it all makes sense.  Maarte :)

My cousin Larry took this picture for me and I laughed my a$$ off when he showed it to me.  It's a little family inside thing that unless you're fam or close to, you know.  H i l a r i o u s .  I tell ya!

And what made it even funnier is that I hate Ginger.  It reminds me of every time I'm sick and my mother would make ginger tea for me, which I do still drink, but hate.  It reminds me of it every time and I mentioned it to my cuz and his wife and when they saw it, they took a picture of it instantly!  lol.  Thanks guys!  Love you!  You made my day!  ♥  I could not stop laughing.

And you bet I'm grabbing a whole bunch to bring back home with me!  ;)

Shoes For The Stars

So, I stumbled across this store on Melrose, called "Shoes for the Stars" where they have a variety of shoes and dresses that Celebs, Stylists and PR go to for red carpet events.  I got to know the owner, Jacob who is very well known all around town and in the Fashion Industry.  A very nice guy and I was given the opportunity to pull here for "The Great Gatsby" Photo Shoot I did for Designer Dar Sara, which I will blog about soon.

While I was here, I got to do a fun little photo shoot with some of the pieces.  It is a showroom of one of a kind pieces for celebs such as Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga and Miss Universe.  These pieces are exceptional.  The work and talent that goes into each individual piece is phenomenal.  I truly respect the art, talent and dedication of these artists, as I can relate to it myself.  It made me realize that a showroom of my work is what I need and want to do.  My ideal was to have my own boutique, but couture needs a showroom  :)

I was a kid in a Couture Candy Store.  Couture Heaven.  Grinning from Ear to Ear.  It was as if I was 8 again in my moms closet (without her knowing, of course ;) trying on her clothes, jewellery and make up.  Oh what a feeling and what a thrill!  You'll see why... It's just one of those things that brought me back to a little girl again and bwoy was it fun!  lol

I highly suggest that you stop by for a visit next time you're in LA.  It's well worth the trip and one you won't want to miss!

But if you love trends, go for it!  It's a good one!  :)  Ohh yess.. I Love me Some Floral!  Get Yours on Too!

My Journey Begins.......................

I've been here a little over 2 months now.  What can I say... I ♥ California.  That picture above is hanging in my room and it's been with me since either the last time or the second last time I was here.  I can't even remember, but it's been with me and always will.  Cali Girl @ Heart, and not to sound corny, but will also alwayz be in my heart.... ;) lol.  Ok, enough of the cheese... let's get down to the nitty gritty.

I'm here for work.  Styling, Designing, Photo Shoots, Connecting and Networking.  I work on Melrose and live on Hollywood.  What more could a girl ask for??!  *sigh.  Love me or Leave me, I'm here to stay.  Welll... I will be between Toronto and Cali.  My two worlds, remember?!  But then, eventually one ;)  Can you guess which one??!  hmmmm

So far so good.  Ups and Downs.  More Ups than Downs.  Lovely Weather.  Palm Trees.  Colorful Fashion.  Very Interesting and Creative People.  Surprisingly Semi Domesticated by Force lol.  West Side.  Lots of Life Lessons.  Hollywood.  Clothes.  Shoes.  Hair.  Make Up.  Photographers.  Models.  Stylists.  Designers.  Shopping.  Starbucks.  Streetsmarts.  Melrose.  Must Have Car.  Busy.  Cali Swag.  Survival of the Fittest.  Hollyweird.  Couture.  Glamour.  Celebrities.  Red Carpet.  Awards.  Inspiration.  Guys.  Girls.  Beach.  Tan.  Fun.  Sun.  Parties.  Rodeo Drive.  Beautiful Places to See but Still haven't Conquered.  Tonnes of Opportunities.  A Must Visit.  The American Dream.  What's Not to Love.  NOT DONE YET.

 ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~ Find Your Bliss ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~

There’s a popular belief amongst anthropologists: that you must immerse yourself in an unfamiliar world, in order to truly understand your own.

Annie Braddock, from the movie “The Nanny Diaries” [2007]

Now in order to truly understand this statement, you really must do and be as it says.  I was living back home in comfortable Toronto and really did not realize, but knew at the same time, that once I left home and did something drastic, like perhaps fly 5000 miles to California, let's say... lol; that my comfort zone would be shifted; and say it ain't so... here I am ;)

And, I knew this.  I wasn't oblivious to it.  But I gotta tell you, I really did not know the extent of this shift until I arrived here.  Don't get me wrong, I still love California with all my heart, but living here is not the same as vacationing here, especially having done so for the first time, period.  I've been here many times before to visit family and vacay, but never for more than two weeks at a time, and my decision in staying here for 5 months, yes, I am here for 5 months folks lol, is to truly experience the life here, not as a tourist or a visitor, but as a local Californ-I-A...

So far, it's been great.  I love California.  I'm a true California Girl at heart.  Everyone who knows me is aware of this and has always known.  Just the fact that I'm out here right now, not only do I have their love and support, but they also know it's what makes me happy and agree I should be here.  It's no surprise to them, whether it's now or later, that I ventured off...  And that I did; NOW :)

I am here.  I have spread my wings and I am here to make my mark.  My mark on Cali Sand I call it.  It definitely is Unfamiliar.  It definitely is a Challenge.  And it definitely is a Change.  But at least I can say NOW I know.  I know a world that is completely different from my own and because of that, I can now love and appreciate my world in a way that I never knew or even understood before.  That is the Beauty of Change and that is the Beauty of Self.  Know it, Be it and Do it.  You will love yourself for it and others will love you back in return.

Now I can say I have Two Worlds to call my Own.  They are very different in every sense of the word, but I love them both equally in very different ways.  It did take me literally flying across the map to get these two worlds to collide into ONE Understanding of Self.  BUT I DID AND I KNOW.

Average People

I love this quote from Kelly Cutrone, an American fashion publicist, television personality and author.  This conversation was derived from an episode of 'The City'.  An oldie, but goodie :)

Kelly:  "You have to be prepared for people to hate you.  You know, average people love to be average because nobody bothers them."
Whitney:  "Well, I don't want to be an average person."
Kelly:  "Well then it would be crazy if you weren't terrified."

This scene stuck with me immediately because I could definitely relate.  I've always been different, whether it is as a person, my style or my personality.  And because of that you are looked at differently.  I've never been average nor would ever want to be.  I've never been satisfied with 'the norm', the 9-5 way of living, the 'in the box' thinking, or whatever you want to call it.  I always strive and is who I am; to be different.  I embrace this and love it.

Now, just like in Kelly's quote, when you're not average... people will bother you.  These people are called Haters.  lol I really don't like to use this term and often don't, but in actuality, it's the truth.  That's why there are haters out there, a lot of them in fact, but that is only because YOU are not like them, or 'the norm' and what it does, is give them something to talk about.  That's what they do.  We all have haters or have come across one, at least in our lives.  If not, then lucky you.  I've had my share and probably still do.  To my face or behind my back, but I rather be different than be average and if that's what it takes, then keep a coming :P  Realize it though, I don't support it.  I rather and am more of a person that believes to encourage and be happy for people as oppose to hating for no apparent reason, which is usually the case.  Most often, haters are insecure in themselves and I really do hope that one day they will learn to spread love as oppose to hate.

Being different, not only brings on these negative people, but also comes with it is taking great risks and fear.  Just like Whitney being terrified of her image and work being disliked by the masses, she took a risk and this involves you coming out of your comfort zone and feeling afraid.  I encourage all of you to do this.  It doesn't have to be skydiving, bungee jumping or climbing Mount Everest!  It could be something small, something that you normally wouldn't do, but would love to, sometime in your life, set out and do.  Whether it is enrolling in a dance class, learning a new language or just meeting new people.  Whatever your fear is or whatever's been stopping you, GO DO IT.  You only live once and life is short.  You'll be happier with the result of doing it as oppose to not.  Take the chance and conquer it!   "It would be CRAZY if you didn't!"  :P

Simple ;)

Just like Fashion Trends, there are Color Trends. Color Trends are just as important because it previews the 'feature' color for the season. Can you guess this season's color? We'll leave it until the end of this blog post and see just how close you were ;)

Now, much the same as Fashion Trends, which you already know, I don't follow. As far as Color, I've always had an unexplainable knack of being able to forecast color trends before it coming out. I know, hard to believe, but it's odd and I even surprise myself. I do have a favorite color, but besides that, I would always have a feature 'color' that I would either be wearing or shopping for because I was just really into it at the moment.  And again without following the Fashion Trends, I wouldn't research or study this. The colors would obviously change from time to time because that's how trends work, but I just called it my favorite colors at the time and it always worked out to be the color that was trending. Unpremeditated I call it. Sound familiar? (*hint: Previous blog quote)

Do you remember wayyy back, when the color purple was popular?  No word of a lie, I was into it 3 years before that time period.  I remember it being six years ago, I had a wedding to go to and I was shopping for a purple dress.  And need I not leave out that when I shop, I ensure to go everywhere and exhaust all of my options until I am satisfied.  I was with my girlfriend Tiffany and I know you remember this girl lol, we were going all around Yorkdale and I HAD TO have a purple dress.  Even she couldn't understand why it had to be purple, but it did.  And so I found it.  It was a cute purple stretch dress from FCUK (French Connection), with little yellow/gold floral accents.  So pretty and very content I was.  This was 2007, so it was 2010 when the color purple became a hit.  Don't ask me how, it's just something I know for some strange reason and colors I always wear before it even comes out or at that current moment.  ?  Just one of those things... Left unanswered or a natural gift again I like to call it.  Not complaining :)

After that, I knew I was just a natural Color Guru lol.  Hence my blog, True Colors.  I love Color and am good at it!  Great combo, huh?!  So, let me share with you... Colors that prevailed after that were Royal Blue, Nude/Blush, Navy, Turquoise, Coral, Emerald Green, Metallics, White and Black, Pastels, Neon and now... Apricot!  Soft Orange Tones, Tangerine and Sun Kissed hues are the colors of the season.  Now, did you guess that?  Were you right?!  :)  Good for you if you were, if not... look out for it!  And you can say; now you know!

Besides having a natural ability to forecast trends, which I know not everyone has, there are websites that can assist you.  WGSN is a renowned company and worldwide leader in forecasting color trends.  Use them as guides again, but put your own spin on it.  Always!
